WallDamp is the cleanest and most effective structural damping material for calming wall-shudder and drywall thunder. Available for immediate purchase are bundles of 200 Squares, suitable for treating a wall up to 20' long and 10' tall.
WallDamp is a truly innovative tool for cleaning up the lowest octaves of the audio range without occupying any floor or wall space.
Integrated into the wall construction, WallDamp rapidly converts the motion of vibrating sheets into heat through dissipation of shear stress forces.
You simply sandwich the WallDamp material between two any pieces of structural sheet goods, screw it together, and you now have constrained layer damping and better isolation and control of subwoofer bass.
WallDamp is a self-adhesive sound and vibration damping material. Apply between drywall, studs, and joists in residential construction projects to produce quieter and calmer homes, reminiscent of those lath and plaster homes but at a fraction of the cost.
Benefits
WallDamp Acoustic Soundproofing/Damping System
- Calm thundering/shuddering walls and ceilings
- Turn your room surfaces into large membrane bass traps
- Isolate subwoofer-range sound
- Improve bass dynamics and musicality
- Built-in molecular adhesive improves performance and simplifies installation
Blocks Sound Conduction through Damping and Decoupling
Add WallDamp between the stud/joist and drywall to block the conduction of sound the stud of the wall and add sound-absorbing insulation in the wall cavity to help absorb the conduction of sound through the air between the studs. WallDamp weighs 1/3rd the density of steel. Because of the difference in material density WallDamp reflects sound and because of its absorption properties, it absorbs sound being conducted between one side of the wall to the other.
Eliminates Wall and Ceiling Shudder through Damping
Add WallDamp between studs and drywall to damp the otherwise free vibration of the drywall that is suspended between the studs. Ever knock on the wall to find the stud? That hollow sound between studs is the bending vibration of the drywall and creates a "drum head" sound that radiates out of the room and also back into it. WallDamp on the stud face is distorted by the tiny movement absorbs energy out of the vibration. Add Walldamp between adjacent layers of double drywall to dramatically reduce vibration, thus drumming and transmission. Improve RT60 in the lowest octaves.
Reduces Sound Transmission Through Drywall Panels
When people walk across the wood floor or close a door, mechanical sound transmission paths send noise into neighboring rooms. Overhead footfall transmits noise through the ceiling assembly. When the subwoofer of a home theater or HiFi system is playing, the walls, ceiling, and even the floor will also be set into sympathetic vibration. That’s why people in other parts of the house or even next door shout “turn the bass down”. Adding WallDamp between studs/joists and drywall and between adjacent layers of drywall breaks up the transmission paths to improve soundproofing.
Specs
- Squares:
- Size (each square): 4" x 4" x 1/16" thick
- Weight (per bundle of 25): 2.2 pounds (1 kg)
- Material: viscoelastic polymer
- Coverage: one WallDamp Square per square foot of surface
TestingThe following test was conducted by Architectural Testing, Inc. The baseline construction was 1/2" gypsum attached to both sides of 2x4 lumber studs built 16" on center. The two scenarios tested indicate the relative benefits of applying damping between the studs and the drywall versus between two layers of drywall. The optimal system would have damping applied at both locations. Clearly, the sound isolation benefits of WallDamp are most pronounced in the lowest audio octave.
Setup
Quick & Easy Vibration Damping During Construction or Renovation
Each sheet is 4” x 4” x 1/16” thick, double sided adhesive and release paper.
- Apply one sheet per square foot to wall or ceiling.
- Remove release paper from one side, apply to existing sheetrock on one-foot centers.
- Press in place with 4” hard rubber roller.
- Remove second layer of release paper.
- Immediately apply second layer of sheetrock with the long dimension vertical, sheetrock screws as usual.
